A little more about Ellen's Chess School

Chess has given me so much: joy, friendships, confidence, and a place to keep learning. I know how much it means to find a place where there is room for both you and your passion.

Young players with curiosity and motivation are everywhere, but the resources and opportunities around them are not always the same. Ellen’s Chess School exists to make the path forward a little more open.

The mission is to bring serious chess training and the joy of the game to young players who might not otherwise have the same opportunity. A few players at a time, with real care, encouragement, and the feeling that they and their chess matter.

Everything here is voluntary. It's just one person, a handful of players, and a shared love of the game.

Meet Ellen

Hello! I’m Ellen. I’ve played chess since I was ten — mostly happily, and for many years rather seriously too. My rating has gone up and down like everyone else’s, but chess has always stayed with me.

Chess background: I hold the Woman International Master title and I have also represented Denmark at European and World events, including the Chess Olympiad.

How I teach: with lots of questions. I would rather a player understand one idea deeply than memorise twenty they cannot use. We talk properly through plans, decisions and mistakes, because that is where confidence and real improvement come from.

Our philosophy

What we care about

  • 01Keeping the love of chess at the heart of every lesson
  • 02Learning from mistakes without being afraid of them
  • 03Making serious coaching available to more young players
  • 04Understanding ideas, not just memorising moves
  • 05Patience to improve through consistent work
